IN ORDER TO HIGHLIGIHT PROGRESS OF OUR REVITALAZATION PROGRAM IN THE DOWNTOWN AREA I AM CO-SPONSORING A UNIQUE SERIES OF ARTS
PROJ ECTS WITH THE DOWNNTOWN MERCHANT'S ASSOCIATION. THE F'IRST OF THESE PROJECTS, A COLORFUL MURAL PAINTED ON THE METAL WINDOW COVERINGS OF THE BILTMORE HOTEL WAS COMPLETED YESTERDAY BY LOC/\L ARTISTS FROM THE PROVIDENCE PUBLIC EXCHANGE FOR THE ARTS, UNDER THE DIRECTION OF ROBERT RIZZO.
A COMPANION TO THE BILTMORE MURAL IS SCHEDULED TO BEGIN SHORTLY. THIS WILL CONSIST OF VIDEOTAPED DOCUMENTARY TRACING THE STAGES OF CONSTRUCTION IN THE INTERIOR OF THE BILTMORE. WHEN COMPLETED, THE FILM WIILL BE SHOWN IN CITY HALL, THE BILTMORE LOBBY, AND WILL BE AVAILABLE TO MERCHANTS' GROUPS FOR SPECIAL SCREENINGS. IN THIS WAY THE COMMUN ITY WILL BE INVOLVED IN A VISUAL PARTNERSHIP WITH THE RECONSTRUCTION OF THE BILTMORE HOTEL.
ALSO, IN THE PLANNING STAGES IS A PROJECT TO PAINT THE BUS WAITING
STATION AT KENNEDY PLAZA, WITH THE PAINT SUPPLIED BY THE RHODE ISLAND PUBLIC TRANSIT AUTHORITY.
I AM MOST PLEASED THAT THESE CONCERNED AND TALENTED ARISTS HAVE COME FORWARD TO PROVIDE STRIKING COMPLEMENTS TO ALL THAT WE ARE DOING IN THE DOWNTOWN AREA, AND I AM DELIGHTED BY THE LOCAL SUPPORT OF THIS EFFORT TO JOIN THE ARTIST AND COMMUNITY IN A CONTINUING DIALOGUE
